Ductless is the default answer in a house that has never had forced air. Where ductless is the obvious choice
A house on electric baseboard has no ducts to reuse, so a ducted system would mean building a duct network from nothing. The same applies to additions, suites and finished basements added long after the original build. In those cases the question is not ductless or ducted — it is how many zones the house actually needs.
How many heads the house needs
One head serves one open area well and adjoining rooms poorly. Doors are the deciding factor: a hallway with four closed bedrooms off it will not heat from a single head in the living room, whatever the capacity. Two- and three-head systems cost more and also earn more — a two-head system replacing oil pays up to $11,000 at the lowest income threshold against $7,000 for a single head.
What the electrical panel has to carry
Panel capacity is settled by a load calculation under CEC Rule 8-200, not by the age of the panel or the number of empty breaker spaces. Plenty of older services turn out to have room. Where an upgrade is genuinely required, the Energy Savings Program lists an electrical service upgrade rebate as an add-on.

- A load calculation under CEC Rule 8-200 showed the existing service could carry a two-head system without an upgrade. The heads went to the main living area and the hallway, and the baseboards stayed in the bedrooms as backup.

Do ductless heads need to run in every room?
No. Heads are placed by zone, not by room. An open living, dining and kitchen area is normally one zone; bedrooms behind closed doors each need their own head or a supplementary source.
Can a mini-split heat a whole house on its own?
Often, but only where the layout suits it. The Energy Savings Program requires the primary system to heat at least 50 percent of the home to 21°C for the whole heating season, and BC Hydro's larger rebate requires 100 percent of the load at −5°C.
Is ductless noisy indoors?
The compressor sits outside. Indoor heads run a fan, which is audible at high speed and close to silent at low. Placement matters more than the specification sheet.
